The President’s Awards for Service Excellence
Applaud a deserving colleague, manager or team by way of the President’s Awards for Service Excellence, honouring individual, managerial and team efforts. You simply need to explain your choice in writing (a maximum of 350 words) and encourage two persons to write a short letter of reference supporting your recommendation.

Individual award
The award consists of two $2,000 prizes – one for a manager and one for a staff member. Please specify the award category (manager or staff member) when submitting your nomination.

Objectives
- Tangibly recognize the importance the University lends to service excellence and more specifically to improving the student experience.
- Highlight the key role that managers and staff members play in positions geared heavily toward service excellence towards students.
- Encourage managers and staff members to provide high-quality service consistently while improving the student experience.
- Help employees identify with the University’s mission and, especially, with the principles of service excellence and improving the student experience, endorsed by the Administration.
The award is designed to:
- recognize one manager and one staff member (Regardless of job status or level. See eligibility criteria below.) whose service delivery skills in improving the student experience prove exceptional
- highlight the manager’s and the staff member’s creativity and initiative in finding particularly effective ways to meet the needs of students
- honour the manager’s and staff member’s constant efforts to maintain and strengthen the University’s image
Description
- $2,000 cash prize for a manager and a second $2,000 for a staff member
- Commemorative plaque displayed in a high-traffic area of the award recipients faculty or service
- Manager’s and staff member’s names and pictures posted on the University’s wall of honour
Presentation
The award is presented by the President of the University at the Founders’ Breakfast.
Recognition of the award winners
- The award winners receive a personal invitation to the Founders’ Breakfast where the President will present the awards and briefly highlight the winners’ accomplishments
- The award winners may also be invited to workshops on service excellence and improving the student experience, to share their insights and special approaches
- Each nominee receives a letter of congratulations from the President
Eligibility criteria
All managers and staff members are eligible for the award, regardless of their job status or category: contract or permanent.
Nominations
- Nominations must be submitted with the employee’s consent
- Nominations can come from any group or individuals such as managers, colleagues, professors, students, students’ parents, members of the general public
- Employees cannot nominate themselves
- Nominations must be submitted by e-mail to aplus@uottawa.ca or by regular mail to the attention of Sylvie Desjardins, Tabaret Hall, Office 046 not later than March 30, 2012.
Nominations must include the following information:
- A text describing the nominee’s exceptional contribution to service excellence aimed at improving student experience (maximum of 350 words)
- At least two, and no more than five, references, each of whom must provide a short letter or statement (maximum of 150 words) describing the nominee’s exceptional efforts in providing services that help improve the student experience
- Contact information for the nominators, the references and the nominee
Selection criteria
- 1. The degree to which the nominee’s efforts enhance the University’s reputation
- 2. How innovative the nominee is in providing service that improves student experience.
- 3. How big and how broad an impact on the quality of student experience, the nominee’s service has created.
- 4. How consistently the nominee maintains these high service standards
Selection
- The Selection Committee decides on the shortlists of no more than five nominees (managers and staff members) whose contributions to service excellence in improving the student experience truly stand out.
- The Selection Committee submits the shortlists to the President of the University, who then decides on the winner.

Objectives

- Encourage teams to innovate in the area of service excellence and finding ways to improve student experience.

The award recognizes a team that:
- stands out for the quality of the service it provides in improving student experience;
- takes an innovative approach in designing or delivering products and services that improve student experience.
- constantly strives to strengthen the University’s image
Description
- A commemorative plaque is presented to the team
- A team plaque is displayed in a high-traffic area where the team works
- The names and photos of team members are posted on the University’s wall of honour

Eligibility criteria
All teams are eligible. Members can come from the same faculty or service, or they can form a multi-sector or multi-disciplinary team from different areas and job categories such as permanent staff, students, contract employees, managers, etc.
Nominations
- Nominations must come from clients of the teams proposed or from a member of Senior Management (in which case at least of the reference letters should be provided from a client of the team proposed).
- Teams are not allowed to nominate themselves.
- Nominations do not require the use of a form. They must be submitted by e-mail to aplus@uottawa.ca or by regular mail to the attention of Sylvie Desjardins, Tabaret Hall, Office 046 no later than March 30, 2012.
